all in one glucose meter
Diabetes Mine Meters all-in-one: Now you see them... or notThe idea of an all-in-one glucose meter that eliminates the need to carry around a lot of separate D-supplies is so attractive! But in many ways it is like the mirage of water on the desert horizon that we can never achieve. Many companies have promised glucose meters with built-in lancets and test strips to make D-management easier for us PWDs (people with diabetes), but so far they have all been. Recently, one of these all-inclusive device developers showed that he was appointed by the first-business investors should be observing in the near future: in St. Louis, MN, who is creating a glucose monitoring product line that believes it will "change the game" for diabetes devices. The company is not a new child in the block; Pepex has been around and for four years has been working on its all-inclusive measuring platform called. Different that traditional meters that use a strip to measure the blood of a lancet finger tip, the Trio will not actually draw any blood, but will test the blood at the source of the tissue, the company says. The meter itself will be about the size of an iPhone, and you will be able to break into a thin side-loading disposable cartridge that houses a plastic supply molded glucose test "chips" that consolidate a lancet and glucose control technology into a single piece. Metalogic This is based on Pepex's owner to detect blood glucose levels — electrochemical biosensors within the cartridge that are composed of individual fiber threads over the diameter of a human hair. While the company sells the cartridges as able to maintain "the value of a week of chips", there is no clear number at this time in how many they might involve. Once the cartridge is used, the user can unlink it and dispose of it without having to handle the lancet needles or test chips directly. In other words: without fuse, without moss. "This technology has not been used in diabetes and will change the game by how we monitor glucose levels," said Pepex financial chief Joseph Driver recently in a phone interview. "There is a lot of magic in putting this technology on any device, and that magic is what we have." The same concept will apply to future versions of the developing meter, such as the small round meter with the hooked cartridge at the back (see image), and the , that would really integrate this all-inclusive meter with an insulin reservoir to become an insulin pump too (!) According to Pepex, Trio meters will not only be easier to use, but will also lead to better measurement accuracy simply because the user-error would not be so common with these products. History & Ambitions Driver tells us that biosensor technology CCM in the heart of it is something that dates back to the late 90s, when Freestyle technology was being created; it was what became TheraSense products and was finally bought by Abbott and added to the FreeStyle line. The CCM technology was put on hold for years, but eventually the researchers and product developers started looking for the technology for the market, he says. We had to ask, if this technician is so big, why hasn't he been implemented before by a larger diabetes device company? Once again, we asked expert on diabetes technology, a veteran expert on glucose management devices. He said there is no reason to think that CCM technology cannot be accurate, as composite metal-based sensors tend to be more accurate than those using carbon electrodes. But one thing to take into account is that glucose oxidates and becomes one, which means that people could become allergic to them very quickly and that they would have to be taken into account in the development of the device, Ginsberg said. So, what's the timeline for the Trio meter? Driver told us that they have a fairly ambitious plan, hoping to file multiple applications of 510(k) with the FDA by January and I hope you get the OK regulation at some point in mid-2014. (Read: Really?!) Pepex has manufacturing facilities in St. Louis and Arizona where Trio products would be manufactured, says Driver. Once the initial Trio meter was approved and available, Pepex would gradually add other meters and technology, as it is able to eventually reach a point where they could look at the addition of the insulin reservoir, and even the integration of CGM technology (continuous glucose monitor). Driver says the company is already talking to "one of the main players in insulin delivery" about an additional device, and the addition probably would come in a third-generation product on the road. Earlier this year, Pepex signed a mobile technology to add wireless mobile technology to Trio products and allow mobile communication to mobile as well. Having that kind of communication is essential for any product that advances in this technological-savvy era, Driver said. "It's exciting to go through the RcienteD phase and be so close to putting this on the market," he said. Competition Of course, Pepex is not the only company that works to develop an all-inclusive device: A few weeks ago I received a glucose meter Mendor Discreet* to test. The meter came packaged with a sealed cartridge of test strips, tiny lancets, a small bottle of control solution, a data cable (to download data) in your software, and a CD with user instructions (together with paper configuration instructions). My first reaction when I pulled the meter out of his box was "It's much bigger than my glucometer." But when I thought about it for a minute I realized it's actually smaller since there's no need to take a case with strips and a closing device. Setting up the meter, which is encased in a transparent plastic protector, was easy enough. Once you've loaded with a 25-string cartridge and a lancet, you're good to go. When lifting the protector, it automatically produces a test strip ready for use. The internal lancet device is also prepared by the opening of the case.all- in-a glucose meter, the . What does it mean in one? It means that the meter, the closing device, and a 25-strip test cartridge are part of a small box, approximately the size of an iphone. So the race is to see who can get your all-inclusive meter done and approved first in the United States. So life as PWD can get a little more convenient, as we'll have fewer things to wear and bother. In the market perspective, Ginsberg says: "It's interesting. It is difficult for a small business to survive, especially now because with competitive bidding to take out a lot of its type 2s, they all fight for type 1s. Type 1s are half the market, but there are many fewer people and you have to work hard to reach those people." Here is the hope that Trio and other common devices will appear in pharmacy shelves soon... instead of disappearing like another diabetes mirage. Read this now.
